outsource bookkeepingWhen bringing up the subject of outsourcing most people probably think about overseas call centers and rightly so given all the media attention the subject has received over the past few years.

BUT outsourcing is not just about overseas call centers or in fact sending work overseas at all.

Small business owners with limited resources will eventually reach a point whereby they have to think about employing staff or outsourcing tasks, as there becomes a point when you can’t do everything on your own. There is also the work/life balance that needs to be considered.

Concentrate on what you are good at. You can outsource what you’re not good at.

Outsourcing what you’re not good at

Rather than trying to be a jack of all trades, it is worth outsourcing the things you’re not good at.  Look at it this way, say you’re a plumber, you may be great at installing a bathroom suite or fixing a leak but when it comes to designing graphics for the side of your van you are useless.  Rather than spend hours trying to save money, why not outsource the task to someone who can do it in a fraction of the time.  Yes it will cost you money but your time can be better spent doing what you do best and earning more money.

Outsource the things you don’t want to do

The same thing can be said for the tasks you don’t want to do.  Again using the above scenario you may be a great plumber but have no interest in fixing leaks, instead you take on a trainee and pass on this type of work to them, allowing you to use your skills on more complex jobs.

Outsourcing is similar to employing staff

When you take on staff they are usually hired to perform a set job or range of duties.  Outsourcing is very similar to employing staff, as you are assigning certain tasks to someone else to complete.  Staff require costs such as sick pay, holiday pay and then there are additional one off costs such as recruitment fees, training and advertising to find an employee.  Outsourcing could be a more cost effective option as there are no additional costs, some services may require a contract term, but sometimes outsourcing can be done on a pay as you go type basis whereby you only pay for what you use.

Outsource bookkeeping and accounting duties

Taking the above into account if you are a small business owner and are currently trying to juggle the day to day bookkeeping of your business, or perhaps you are considering taking on a member of staff, now may be the time to consider the option of outsourcing your bookkeeping and/or accounting duties.

With the increase in popularity of online bookkeeping software and the ease of sharing information, long gone are the days of only being able to use a local bookkeeping or accountant to help you with the financial and paperwork side of your business.
